We started making canvas bags for the trapping and snaring industry in 1997. Prior to that, I had used a variety of bags, and had basically wore them all out over a period of time. In 1997, a friend of mine in Montana had bought out a boot shop, with plans to make it into a second hand store. The previous owner had left an old sewing machine in the corner, and my friend commented one day that he would like to build something out of canvas, “Just to learn how to do it.” My wheels were turning, and I asked him if would like to make a canvas trapping bag for me, that would incorporate all the features that I needed in a land trapping bag. We custom designed the first BADLANDS BAG, and I loved it. I was planning to attend the Pennsylvania Convention that June, and I asked him to make 12 to take and try to sell while there. I filled my carry on bag with them, and put them on my table to show them to people. Well, to make a long story short, I was sold out by noon on Friday, and when I had a short break, I ran to the nearest pay phone (pre cell phone days), and called my buddy back in Montana. I told him the good news, and told him to “go ahead and make 100.” As the old saying goes, the rest is history. The BADLANDS BAG is without a doubt the most popular canvas trapping bag in history, with 1000’s being sold. My buddy has since retired, and we’ve contracted with a skilled western saddle maker to build these for us now. All of our bags are made with heavy canvas ‘duck,’ waxed thread, and sturdy handles. They will stand up to years of use. They have stood the test of time, and have become truly an ‘industry standard.’
